PNG stores the pixels exactly. Nothing is thrown away in the conversion and nothing is thrown away again if you re-save it, which is what makes it the right format for anything you plan to edit or crop later.

Transparency survives

JPEG has no alpha channel, so anything transparent comes out on a solid background. PNG keeps it — which matters for logos, stickers, screenshots of translucent UI, and anything you are about to composite.

Questions about HEIC

Should I actually use PNG, or JPEG?
For an ordinary photograph, JPEG is usually the better choice: it will be several times smaller and you will not see the difference. Choose PNG when the picture must not change at all — screenshots, artwork, flat colour, anything with transparency, or a file you are going to edit again. Expect a PNG of a photo to be large.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The HEIC is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, and never leaves your device. You can watch the network tab while you use it.
Does converting to PNG lose any quality?
The PNG itself is lossless, so nothing is lost in that step. What you cannot get back is anything the camera already discarded when it wrote the HEIC — the PNG preserves exactly what was in the file, not more.
Why can my computer not open HEIC in the first place?
HEIC is the format Apple switched to in 2017 to save space. It is efficient but patent-encumbered, so Windows and many web apps never shipped a decoder. Converting is usually easier than fighting it.
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
