How to make a background transparent — or white

  1. Add your image

Drag and drop a photo (JPG, PNG or WebP), or click to choose one. It loads straight into your browser — nothing is uploaded.

  2. Remove the background

Click Remove background. The subject is cut out on your device in a couple of seconds — the first run downloads the model, then it is cached.

  3. Pick transparent or white, then download

Switch the result between a transparency checkerboard and solid white to see both, then take the transparent PNG or the white-background JPG. Same cut-out, two files — nothing runs twice.

What you get from this free online background editor

Transparent — or a solid white background

Download a cut-out with a true alpha channel for slides and mockups, or the same subject on a pure white background for marketplace listings, passport photos and headshots. No white box you did not ask for, and no transparent PNG showing through a Word document.

Runs on your device

GPU-accelerated where your browser supports it, with a fallback everywhere else. No queue, no credits.

Private and free

No accounts, no per-image limits, no watermarks. Your images are never uploaded — the whole thing runs in your browser.

The model behind it

Powered by ORMBG (Open Remove Background), an Apache-2.0 cut-out model. We chose it over the better-known RMBG-1.4 because that one is licensed for non-commercial use only — this one you may use for work.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make a picture background transparent?
Drop the picture in above and click Remove background. A segmentation model runs on your device, separates the subject from what is behind it, and hands you a PNG with a transparent background you can download.
How do I change a photo background to white?
Remove the background, then set Background to White under the result — the preview swaps the transparency checkerboard for solid white — and use Download JPG on white. The subject is composited onto pure white (255, 255, 255) at the photo's full resolution, which is what Amazon, eBay and most passport and visa uploaders ask for.
Will the background be transparent, or white?
Whichever you pick. The PNG download keeps a real alpha channel, so whatever you place it on shows through; the white download is the same cut-out on a solid white background, as a JPG. Both come from one run — you can take both.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The background removal runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your image is never uploaded, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.
Which images work best?
It is tuned for photos with a clear subject — people, products, pets, objects. JPG, PNG and WebP are all supported. Fine detail like flyaway hair and thin wires is where any cut-out struggles, this one included.
Is it really free? Are there limits?
Yes — completely free, no account, and no per-image limit. Because everything runs on your device, there is nothing for us to meter.
Which model does it use?
ORMBG — Open Remove Background — under Apache-2.0, so it is commercial-safe. The popular RMBG-1.4 is not, which is why we do not use it. The model runs in your browser on WebGPU, falling back to WebAssembly.
