GIF stores every frame separately, so width times length is the file size — and a careless setting makes 40 MB that no chat app will take. The estimate is shown next to the settings, not after the encode.

Optional face tracking

Cropping to square or vertical throws away the sides of the frame, and whoever you were filming tends to be in the part you threw away. Turn on tracking and the crop follows the largest face instead. It is off by default — a plain centre crop is what most clips want.

No upload, no watermark, no queue

The conversion happens in your browser, so there is no file-size limit imposed by a server, nothing to wait behind, and no watermark burned into the result.

What it runs on

No AI model for the conversion itself: frames are decoded with mediabunny and encoded with gifenc, which builds a 256-colour palette and dithers to it. Only the optional face tracking loads a model — OpenCV's YuNet, at 227 KB.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GIF so big?
Because GIF is an old format that stores each frame as a full image with its own 256-colour palette — there is no motion compression like a video codec has. Halving the width quarters the file. Dropping from 20 to 10 frames per second halves it again. Six seconds at 480 pixels is a reasonable target for something you want to paste into a chat.
Why does the frame rate change slightly?
GIF stores the delay between frames in whole hundredths of a second, so only some rates are exactly representable. 10, 20 and 25 fps are exact; 15 fps is really 14.29. The tool samples at the rate it can actually deliver and shows you that number, rather than claiming 15 and playing back slightly slow.
What does face tracking do?
When you crop to square or vertical, most of the frame is discarded. Tracking runs a small face detector over the frames and moves the crop to follow the largest face, smoothing the path so it does not jitter. If no face is found it simply falls back to a centre crop. It is optional because it adds a 227 KB download and a pass over every frame.
How long a clip can I convert?
Up to 15 seconds, and up to 240 frames. That is not a licensing limit, it is the point past which a GIF stops being a sensible format — a longer clip is better served by an MP4 or a WebM.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded and encoded in your browser on your own device. Your video is never uploaded, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.
Does it work with audio?
GIF has no sound — the format simply does not carry an audio track. If you need the audio, keep the original clip or export an MP4 instead.
