How to rotate a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

    Drag and drop the PDF, or click to choose it. Every page appears as a thumbnail you can rotate.

  2. Rotate the pages

    Use each page’s rotate button to turn it 90° at a time, or “Rotate all” to turn the whole document. To fix sideways scans automatically, use Auto-rotate.

  3. Download

    Click Download to save the PDF with the new orientations. Every viewer will show the pages in their new orientation.

What rotating does to the file

Lossless rotation

The rotation is saved as the page’s orientation, the same setting a PDF viewer uses. The page is not redrawn, so text and image quality are exactly what they were.

Auto-rotate for scans

Auto-rotate reads the text on each page to tell which way is up, and turns the pages that need it. A page it cannot judge, such as a photo or a blank page, is left alone.

Every page, or a few

“Rotate all” turns the whole document. Auto-rotate works on the pages you select, or on all of them when none are selected.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate every page at once?
Yes. “Rotate all” turns every page 90° clockwise; press it again to keep turning. You can also rotate individual pages one at a time.
How does Auto-rotate know which way is up?
It runs Tesseract’s orientation detection on each page, in your browser, at about 200 DPI so it can read ordinary body text. It needs text to work from: a page that is mostly photo, or nearly blank, is skipped rather than guessed at.
Does rotating reduce the quality or make the text unselectable?
No. The page is not redrawn; only its rotation setting changes, so the content is identical and the file size hardly changes.
Is the rotation permanent?
It is saved in the PDF you download, so it shows in every viewer. The file you opened is not touched, and any page can be turned back by rotating it again.
